What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial Myofunctional therapy involves a series of targeted exercises designed to improve the function of the muscles in the face, mouth, and jaw, including the tongue and lips. These exercises help correct habits like mouth breathing, improper tongue posture, and dysfunctional swallowing, leading to better breathing, improved oral health, and overall well-being

Importance of nasal breathing

Nasal breathing is essential for both physical and mental well-being. It offers several key benefits, including:

  • Filters, warms, and humidifies air before reaching the lungs

  • Promotes proper oxygen exchange, supporting brain function and focus

  • Helps reduce stress and anxiety by activating the diaphragm

  • Improves sleep quality and oral health

  • Can help manage symptoms of ADHD by improving attention and calming the mind

  • Boosts nitric oxide production, improving blood flow, lowering blood pressure, and supporting heart function for better overall cardiovascular health

By encouraging nasal breathing, you can improve respiratory health, reduce anxiety, and support optimal facial and jaw development.

  • 78% of patients noted a decrease in mouth breathing and increased nasal breathing

  • 77% of patients noticed a decrease in muscle tension

Treatment success

OMT is provided online, starting with a comprehensive assessment to determine your needs. The therapy involves personalized exercises to strengthen and retrain the muscles of the face to improve muscle function.

Daily practice is essential to eliminate improper muscle patterns, with treatment typically lasting 6 to 12 months, however can vary. The therapy is gentle, non-invasive, and tailored to your specific goals, requiring commitment from both the patient and their family for success.
